The Flat Vase
The Flat Vase
Haoying Zhang
gourd, hard maple, glass
The Flat Vase begins with the familiar silhouette of a bottle gourd, grown inside a mold that compresses its naturally rounded body into a flattened form, giving the ancient vessel archetype a distinctly modern edge. Mold-growing is a centuries-old agricultural and craft technique documented in China and practiced by gourd growers around the world today, here, it becomes a way to explore how an ancient natural material can take on a contemporary design language. Fitted with a removable water insert, the piece can hold fresh flowers and serves as a sculptural accent for contemporary living spaces.
