The Kintsugi Vase
Haoying Zhang
Gourd, Lacquer, Silver Powder
The Kintsugi Vase explores the use of a traditional ceramic repair technique as a way to preserve, rather than disguise, the natural character of the gourd. By carefully joining the broken shell with minimal intervention, the repair allows evidence of the maker’s hand to blend with the gourd’s existing form, surface, and imperfections rather than overwrite them. Celebrating repair as part of the object’s continuing life while allowing the natural material to remain visually dominant, the piece works especially well as a sculptural accent on a bookshelf, coffee table, or entryway console.
